Tide-Worn: A Still Life

Pen & Ink, Acrylic Ink on Watercolour Paper, 16×20

CAD $2,500.00

Tide-Worn: a Still Life is a pen and ink depiction of frayed weathered rope and salt-scarred wood. These objects carry time in their fibre and bear witness to the life that water makes possible. This piece is both portrait and relic: a quiet study of endurance and a testament to the intimate dependency between people and the sea.

Though the rope shows signs of wear, it remains intact, holding together despite the forces that have shaped it. In this way, the piece reflects the human experience: the accumulation of hardship, memory, and perseverance.

By choosing pen and ink, a medium rooted in precision and permanence, I highlight texture and detail, mirroring the permanence of lived experience. The stark contrast of black and white removes distraction, inviting viewers to focus on form, tension, and the quiet strength embedded in something often overlooked. The colours in the background are meant to remind the viewer of the colours found around the seaside on the Canadian East Coast.
